New College Durham is celebrating the remarkable achievements of Level 3 Sports Coaching student Hayden Macdonald, whose rapid rise within competitive rowing is earning recognition at regional and national levels.
Hayden, who has been rowing for less than four years with Sunderland Rowing Club, has enjoyed an exceptional season, demonstrating the commitment, resilience and determination required to compete at an elite standard.
Among his recent successes, Hayden secured an outstanding second-place finish overall and first place in the club category at Nottingham Regatta in May. He also achieved third place in the Men's Under-21 Single Sculls event as part of the British Rowing Olympic Pathway competition, competing against some of the country's most promising young athletes.
Continuing his impressive run of form, Hayden claimed third place in the Men's Single Sculls at the Northern Beach Sprints Cup, further cementing his reputation as one of the region's emerging rowing talents.
Adding to an already memorable year, Hayden has also been named a recipient of the Sports Newcastle Unsung Hero Award, recognising his dedication, perseverance and contribution to sport. The Sport Newcastle Unsung Hero Awards took place in June this year at Kingston Park Stadium and celebrated regional volunteers, coaches, and community champions.
Hayden is now setting his sights on qualifying for the prestigious Henley Regatta, widely regarded as one of the most iconic and respected events in the rowing calendar. Qualification would represent another significant milestone in a sporting journey that continues to gather momentum.
Speaking about his recent achievements, Hayden said:
"Achieving these medals has motivated me to push myself further and compete at an even higher standard."
Charlotte Winnard, Sport Lecturer at New College Durham, praised Hayden's accomplishments and commitment to his development both in and out of the classroom.

"Hayden's achievements are a fantastic example of what can be accomplished through dedication, hard work and a genuine passion for sport. To have reached this level within four years of taking up rowing is a truly remarkable achievement.
He consistently demonstrates the commitment, professionalism and determination that we encourage across all of our sport programmes. Everyone within the New College Durham sports team is incredibly proud of what Hayden has achieved so far, and we are excited to see where his journey takes him next."
