Students from New College Durham's Performing Arts programmes recently enjoyed an unforgettable educational visit to London's world-famous West End, combining theatre history, industry insight, practical workshops and world-class performances.

The four-day residential trip provided students with a unique opportunity to experience the theatre industry first-hand while exploring some of the capital's most iconic cultural landmarks.

The visit began with a tour of London's historic Theatre Royal Drury Lane, one of the oldest and most prestigious theatres in the world. Students also took in some of the city's most recognisable sights, including Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, the Houses of Parliament and Trafalgar Square.

The following days offered a packed programme of industry-focused experiences, exploring the renowned National Theatre, visiting Shakespeare's Globe, and gaining valuable insight into the evolution of British theatre through guided tours of these internationally recognised venues.

Alongside the educational visits, the students attended performances of two major West End productions: Hadestown and The Devil Wears Prada. A particular highlight came after Hadestown, when they were given the opportunity to meet leading lady Michelle Andrews, gaining valuable insight into the realities of professional performance careers.

The group also participated in a specialist Hadestown dance workshop at the internationally acclaimed Pineapple Dance Studios, where they developed their practical performance skills while learning choreography inspired by the award-winning musical.

The itinerary was complemented by visits to Covent Garden, Leicester Square, Camden Market, Tower Bridge, the South Bank and the Tower of London, allowing everyone to experience the rich cultural landscape that surrounds London's theatre district.

Second-year student Kaitlin Fleming described the trip as a transformative experience.

"I really enjoyed my trip to London this year. It was amazing to see so many different sights and get tours of different types of theatres while learning about their history. I had the opportunity to see two brilliant shows, Hadestown and The Devil Wears Prada. One was a show I knew really well and the other was completely new to me, but both were incredible and gave me a greater understanding of different theatre productions.

"One of my highlights was getting to visit stage door and meet some amazing actors I admire, including Keelan McAuley. Seeing different theatres and productions has helped me enormously with my future career plans and reinforced my decision to attend drama school in September. Overall, the experience allowed me to build fantastic relationships with both lecturers and fellow students. It was an amazing trip before my time at New College Durham comes to an end."

A member of the Performing Arts teaching team said:

"The London trip is a highlight of the course and an invaluable experience for our students. Following their fantastic performances this year, they have had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the heart of the West End, gaining first-hand insight into the theatre industry and exploring the many career pathways it can offer.

"Throughout the week, students experienced an incredible range of theatre through world-class performances, inspiring workshops and behind-the-scenes tours. They fully embraced life in Theatreland and made the most of every opportunity available to them.

"Most importantly, they were outstanding ambassadors for the college, demonstrating professionalism, enthusiasm and maturity throughout the trip. We are incredibly proud of everything they achieved. It has been a truly memorable and inspiring experience that will stay with them for years to come."

The bi yearly London visit forms an important part of New College Durham's commitment to providing students with career-focused learning opportunities that extend beyond the classroom. By engaging directly with leading theatre practitioners, world-renowned venues and professional productions, students gain valuable experience that supports progression into higher education, drama schools and future careers across the creative industries.
